Today, we are proud to announce the launch of the "Strength in Numbers" programme, a groundbreaking initiative supported by GrowZA and our esteemed partners, aimed at transforming the educational landscape in South Africa.
As a new group of young individuals embarks on their senior certificate examinations, we recognize that our support must extend beyond words of encouragement, evolving into tangible and impactful investments in their educational development. Our matriculants are at a critical juncture, with their performance in these examinations poised to significantly influence their future paths.
While moral support holds value, it cannot replace the tangible resources, skills, and knowledge that our learners require to excel. The responsibility to holistically prepare our matriculants—academically, emotionally, and socially—lies with educators, parents, policymakers, and the broader community.
With Maths Paper 1 scheduled for Friday, 3 November, and Paper 2 following on Monday the 5th, the reality of (lack of) access to basic educational support tools is evident.
In the evolving educational landscape, the tools provided to learners and teachers are crucial in shaping their academic journey and future careers. The scientific calculator stands out as an indispensable tool, highlighted by a comprehensive study from Fort Hare and Wits University.
The study reveals a stark reality: the absence or inadequate competence in using calculators can lead to a loss of up to 15% of marks in Mathematics examinations.
This statistic serves as a wake-up call, emphasizing the critical need for accessible and proficient use of scientific calculators in South African schools.
This reality holds true across subjects in the sciences as well as in economics.
Strength in Numbers: A Commitment to access
The "Strength in Numbers" programme, supported by GrowZA and our partners, represents a sincere commitment to addressing these challenges.
In its initial phase, this initiative will provide thousands of learners and teachers with access to scientific calculators and training. This will be supported by ongoing training to ensure optimal utilization of these vital tools.
The first phase of the programme will roll out across 9 sites in 5 provinces across the country
A Collaborative Effort for a Brighter Future
This programme is a testament to the power of collaboration and the shared vision of our partners to contribute to the educational advancement of South Africa. Together, we are taking a significant step towards bridging the educational gap, empowering learners and educators with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.
We extend a heartfelt invitation to educators, policymakers, and stakeholders across the continent to join us in this movement towards a more inclusive, empowered, and STEM-ready Africa. Let's come together to make this vision a reality.
Now is the time for sincere investment, action, and change. With the "Strength in Numbers" programme, we are laying the foundation for increased access to livelihoods in STEM and beyond.
